Wii Hacking 101: Wii Get Started, the Homebrew Channel

Article by Shadowray7

Well hello there. Name's shadowray7 AKA Pi (Face) AKA OBC's Resident Hacker
So you're interested in hacking? Yes? Then continue on. If not... then please go and flame me or being a hacker. Sides, I'm techinically not a real hacker since all I did was browse through a crap ton of hacking forums and follow instructions. A real hacker is the one who makes all these exploits and applications.
So without further delay allow me to teach you how to install the homebrew channel.

What you need:

   1. SD Card (Any one from 512MB to 32G will do)
   2. The following UNZIPPED downloads + required game (if any):
  1. Bannerbomb OR Smash Stack + SSBB OR Indiana Pwns + Lego Indiana Jones
  2. HackMii Installer

Steps for using Bannerbomb:

   1. Be sure you download the bannerbomb compatible with your System Menu
  1. If you have System Menu 3.0-4.1: Download Bannerbomb v1
  2. If you have System Menu 4.2: Download Bannerbomb v2

   2. If you already have a private folder, rename it something like "privatebkup" or something.
   3. Place the the "private" folder from the bannerbomb download in the root of the SD card. The SD Card should contain the following folder: Private->wii->title->aktn->content.bin NOTE: Do not have anything else in the title folder
   4. Open up the "hackmii_installer_[insert version number]" folder from the hackmii installer download. Look for the file that says "boot.elf" and place in the root of the SD card
   5. Place to the SD card in your
   6. Follow one of the following two steps depending on your System Menu
  1. If you have System Menu 3.0-4.1: Go to Data Management, then pick channels, then pick SD Card. NOT THE SD CARD MENU
  2. If you have System Menu 4.2: Go to the SD Card Menu

   7. A message should pop up asking you to launch boot.elf. Say yes. If the message does not pop up, go back to the bannerbomb site and download one of the other bannerbombs and repeat steps
   8. Select "Install Homebrew channel" and your done.
   9. The Homebrew Channel should now be in your System Menu
  10. I recommend putting the SD card back in your computer after this and heading over to this folder: Private->wii->title. There should be a folder that says "aktn", that's the bannerbomb folder. Delete it, it'll cause problems with the SD Card Menu

Steps for Smash Stack:

   1. Remove/Backup any existing custom stages on Brawl & the SD card and make sure SD is selected when you leave as it may freeze.
   2. Open the SmashStackUS folder and place the private folder in your SD card
   3. Open up the "hackmii_installer_[insert version number]" folder from the hackmii installer download. Look for the file that says "boot.elf" and place in the root of the SD card
   4. Start Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
   5. Go to the stage builder and the .elf file will load
   6. Select "Install Homebrew channel" and your done.
   7. The Homebrew Channel should now be in your System Menu
   8. I recommend deleting the stage using your PC in case you ever want to use custom stages in brawl.

Steps for Indiana Pwns:

   1. If you wish to keep your Lego Indiana Jones save file, be sure to copy it to the SD card and place it somewhere on the computer. Copy the "private" directory from the Indiana Pwns download to the root of your SD card.
   2. Open up the "hackmii_installer_[insert version number]" folder from the hackmii installer download. Look for the file that says "boot.elf" and place it in the root of the SD card
   3. Put your SD card in your Wii and turn it on.
   4. Erase your Lego Indiana Jones save if not erased already
   5. Copy the Indiana Pwns corresponding to your game region to the wii.
   6. Insert LEGO Indiana Jones disc and run the game.
   7. Walk to the “art room” (find some walkthrough on the internet if you cannot find it), look at the second character.
   8. Select "Install Homebrew channel" and your done.
   9. The Homebrew Channel should now be in your System Menu

And that's all there is to it.
Of course you still need to know how to use the Homebrew channel. Which means... time for another wall of text.  :D Aren't walls of text fun, oh but don't worry this one is much shorter

  1. On your SD Card make an apps folder in the root
  2. Sometimes apps you've downloaded from the internet come in folders and sometimes they don't. If they come in folders just drop the folder in the apps folder. But if they don't, you'll need to make a new folder for that app in the apps folder. Then put the boot.elf/boot.dol (if they're not boot.elf/boot.dol just rename them to that keeping .elf/.dol extension) that came with your app into that folder
  3. Place SD Card in your wii
  4. Open up the homebrew channel
  5. ???? Select the app
  6. PROFIT And you should be done
